FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PaygOps Community Edition is a free, self-hosted operations platform for PAYGO, asset-finance and lending businesses, now available on GitHub to any distributor/energy access company, NGO or developer building in the sector.

[Kigali, Rwanda], 27 October 2026 — Masunga, the fintech infrastructure company behind PaygOps, today released PaygOps Community Edition as free, open-source software on GitHub, with support from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.  The self-hosted platform gives last-mile distributors of solar, clean cooking, agricultural and other assets the software to run their operations, at no license cost.

Community Edition is production-ready software, covering more than 80% of day-to-day PaygOps feature usage.

"PaygOps Community Edition is about making proven digital infrastructure accessible to every organisation that needs it, regardless of size or resources. Being open source, organisations can adopt, adapt and build on it with greater flexibility and control. With the support of Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, we can take our ambition much further, helping more operators strengthen their operations and data, scale sustainably and become better positioned to access capital," said Siten Mandalia, CEO of Masunga.

Global Energy Alliance, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, is helping strengthen the Community Edition beyond its public release through documentation, user and community onboarding, continued testing and learning, and efforts to encourage wider adoption. By making core digital tools more accessible and enabling a wider community to use, adapt and contribute to the Community Edition over time, these efforts aim to strengthen operational capacity and data quality for individual companies while helping address shared challenges across the wider energy access sector. The support reflects both organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening locally rooted energy access companies and addressing broader market barriers, in support of Mission 300.

“Smaller and locally rooted energy access companies can face significant barriers to accessing the systems they need to operate efficiently and grow. We are supporting PaygOps Community Edition because shared digital infrastructure can help lower those barriers for multiple companies at once, including those that may be least well served by existing commercial solutions. By supporting sustained adoption, stronger operational capacity, better data and an active user and contributor community, we hope solutions like this can help build stronger companies and a better-functioning energy access market over time” said Carol Koech, Vice President, Africa, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet

Why Masunga is open-sourcing PaygOps

Through more than ten years of working with over 150 last-mile distributors, Masunga has seen how fragmented back-office systems create operational inefficiencies. Examples include contracts tracked in spreadsheets, payments reconciled by hand, inefficient agent management, and inventory that is difficult to monitor.

By making a proven operations platform freely available, Masunga aims to lower the barriers to adopting reliable IT systems and help distributors operate more efficiently. PaygOps Community Edition also aims to establish a shared standard for managing contracts, payments and assets across the sector. With cleaner, more consistent data, distributors can better demonstrate their performance to auditors and investors, bringing them closer to investment readiness.

Community Edition is designed to:

  • Lower the cost of entry: give smaller distributors and local implementers with technical teams a proper operations system without a license fee.

  • Make data consistent: help the sector use common ways of recording contracts, payments and assets, so systems can connect and share data more easily.

  • Grow a community: invite developers, integrators and local IT companies to build on top of PaygOps.

  • Reach new sectors: let local developers and in-house tech teams adapt the platform to their own industries.

  • Give organisations control: let those who prefer to self-host own their technology and data, and keep running it independently over the long term.

Over time, Masunga aims to build a self-sustaining community of distributors, energy access companies, NGOs, software developers and other partners who contribute to the platform and improve interoperability between the systems used across the sector.

What Community Edition includes

  • Leads and clients: lead capture, custom KYC forms, lead generator management and client records.

  • Contracts and payments: cash sales, loans, asset-backed plans, subscription and usage-based contracts, with payment tracking, reconciliation and adjustments.

  • PAYGO devices: basic OpenPAYGO Token integration for compatible devices.

  • Inventory and assets: stock and asset management, with tracking of inventory movements.

  • Offtaking: managing produce purchases and accepting agricultural produce as loan repayment.

  • Account management and configuration: user permissions, organizational hierarchies, client groups and manual SMS campaigns using your own SMS integration..

  • API access and data exports: APIs to connect with other systems and extend the platform, plus CSV exports for external analysis and reporting.
